What is Revitalize Puna?

Revitalize Puna is a collaborative placemaking initiative by the County of Hawai‘i and community members to support Puna’s recovery, readiness, and resilience.

My Role

In my role as the Community Engagement & Placemaking Coordinator within the Disaster Division of the County of Hawai‘i, I am tasked with a the critical responsibility of community engagement. The inception of our division was a direct response to the 2018 Kīlauea Eruption, a pivotal event that necessitated a strategic approach. My current focus revolves around the implementation of the 2018 Kīlauea Eruption Recovery and Resilience plan, channeled through our long-term recovery program, 'Revitalize Puna'.

What sets 'Revitalize Puna' apart is its distinct approach to recovery – a continuous collaboration with the community, fostering mutual action. Unlike the conventional 'consult and create' model, our program thrives on a cooperative alliance that propels us forward.

My journey began as an AmeriCorps VISTA, dedicated to supporting the collaborative working groups termed 'Resilience Capacity Areas'. Over time, my role has evolved into a coordination and project management focused position. I serve as a hub for communication, architecting technical support protocols, guiding planning initiatives, orchestrating resource allocation, and adapting best practices.

Leveraging my marketing and communication skills, I also play a pivotal role in defining and managing the program's brand identity, including the management of our social media channels. This professional endeavor has been both invigorating and challenging, reminiscent of the creative demands I once managed at Plenty Boutique.
